As you know, many of our textbooks have levels of 1200 and higher with some content areas using text with levels as high as 1400 and especially at the higher grades. While strong Reading Apprenticeship instruction will help students who struggle with text, any student who is one year or more behind their grade level proficiency may be considered eligible for participation in READ180. It is important to look at other factors including success on standardized tests, IEP recommendations, and success in all academic areas when making placement decisions.
ELA credit may be awarded for no more than two years of participation in READ180. This may occur at grades 9 and 10, 10 and 11, and 11 and 12, depending when a student has been placed initially or when they have enrolled in the district. Attention should also be given to students who are not responding to this intervention.
