Every 3rd grade class in Ann Arbor Public Schools comes to the Argus Planetarium. It is an integral part of the district's required science curriculum. This curriculum includes a unit on Astronomy that averages 6 weeks in length, and covers a variety of topics, including all of the objectives from the State of Michigan.
The planetarium component consists of 2 parts, a 30 minute previsit and a 60 minute visit to the planetarium.
The topics covered in the unit include the Solar System, stars, seasons, and further depth on moon phases. The previsit introduces ideas about using a planetarium to show sky motion, telling time using the Sun, visualizing space in 3D, and what we find when we go out into space. The visit includes the current night sky, moon and planets, constellations, star properties (including distance, temperature, size, and color), and a simulated trip from Earth to the end of the visible universe (and back).
